While popular as a short story writer & magazine contributor, Prelude was a prelude to his becoming a prominent sf novelist. Written in 47 in 20 days, it wasnt until 51 that it 1st appeared in magazine format from Galaxy Publishing.

Sidgwick & Jackson published it as a novel for UK readers in 53, followed the next year by a US cloth edition from Gnome Press & paperback from Ballantine Books. Its also been titled Master of Space & The Space Dreamers.Prelude to Space recounts events leading to the launch of Prometheus, the 1st spacecraft able to reach the Moon.

It consists of two components, Alpha & Beta. Alpha is a spaceship designed to travel from Earth orbit to the Moon & back, incapable of independent atmospheric flight. Beta is a nuclear-powered flying wing to carry Alpha to orbit. Beta has a reactor to superheat either air or an internal supply of methane (when in space) for thrust. Beta is a ramjet in the atmosphere & is launched using an electric track.

Beta carries Alpha to orbit. Alpha separates & refuels from tanks previously carried into orbit by Beta. Alpha flies to & lands on the Moon while Beta remains in orbit. Alpha returns to Earth orbit, the crew returns to Earth aboard Beta, while Alpha remains in orbit.Antedating Apollo, Prelude argues that space travel is within grasp. Clarke wrote a 76 preface admitting propagandist goals—he was an influential member of the astronautics community when the idea of rockets leaving earths atmosphere was scoffed at by many scientists. The novel ends with the launch.

The plot consists of scientists, engineers & administrators showing Dr Dirk Alexson how the mission will work. Alexson is preparing an official history. He represents the point-of-view character for the sophisticated & imaginative, but non-technical, reader. All technology imagined in Prelude is feasible, tho nuclear engines have only existed as prototypes. It anticipated the Space Shuttle in that the Beta unit lands without power.
