There was significant soil liquefaction which caused some of the land closest to the River Avon to sink by up to 1.5m so that half of the land in the suburb was deemed to be so badly damaged that homes in that area needed to be demolished. The stories include experiences of families and of people living alone, young and elderly, a teacher and pupils at the primary school, staff at the medical center and pharmacy, and people involved in setting up and running a community hub for distribution of water, food, clothing and other needs.

In addition to the personal stories, there are two poems, an introductory chapter about the suburb and the earthquakes, and a final chapter about the situation after the year of quakes.
